10 Year Anniversary of the Northeast Blackout

This week saw anniversary of the Northeast Blackout. On August 14th, 2003, about 50 million people from Ohio to New England and even into Michigan and Ontario, Canada lost power. New York City commuters had to walk miles home across bridges or face being stranded, as the city's transit system came to a halting stop. While telephone systems remained operational, circuits quickly became overloaded so calls couldn't go through. Water systems in several areas lost pressure, forcing boiling advisories to be put into effect. Power was restored within hours in some areas, but others had to wait a few days before their electricity was turned back on.

The Northeast Blackout of 2003 was caused by an aging electric grid and a few overgrown trees. While the system has been upgraded since then, power outages can still be unpredictable and hit at any time. Anticipating emergencies and being prepared ahead of time can be the key to surviving events like the blackout of 2003. Vegan Unplugged by Jon Robertson with recipes by Robin Robertson is a pantry cuisine cookbook that also features a concise emergency preparedness section for everyone in the family, including companion animals. This handy book contains instructions on how to put together a Five-Day Meal Box to feed up to four people for five days, and how to personalize your home pantry for emergencies. The recipes are simple and easy to make using basic ingredients that can be found in most kitchens. Vegan Unplugged book is a must for those who want to be ready for crisis situations in these unpredictable times.

Easy Pantry Cooking for Convenience and Emergencies

With natural disasters once again taking the headlines, I am compelled to write a post about Vegan Unplugged because it's the very reason why Robin and I wrote this book after our experience with Hurricane Isabel back in ’03 and we had to live without power for over a week.

The tornadoes swathing the Midwest, which they say will continue into May, are just a reminder that while only the most devastated areas will find their way onto the evening news, many people in the surrounding areas will live without electrical power for weeks.  This is where Vegan Unplugged comes in. It shows you how to make excellent, quick meals without electrical power, right out of your pantry.

People who use the book love it for everyday cooking, too.  This is why Vegan Unplugged is spreading by word-of-mouth. It’s a book you’ll be glad to have in your home, so it’ll be there where you want it, and, more importantly, it will also be there when you want it.

A Quiet Hurricane Season — So Far

Tropical storm Dan marks only the fourth this season, which runs from June to November.  By contrast, in 2005, a record-breaking year, we recorded 27 tropical storms and 15 hurricanes, 7 of them major, including Dennis, Katrina, Emily, Rita, and Wilma.  Although 2011 has had a quiet hurricane season so far, it’s still a good idea to be prepared.

We found out in 2003 how important it was to be prepared while living in Virginia Beach.  The storms came, took out our power, and left us in the humid oven of late summer with very little nonperishable food.  The result of our experience became the book I wrote, Vegan Unplugged: A Pantry Cuisine Cookbook and Survival Guide

The book has concise instructions for how to prepare for a hurricane, but also for any time when the power goes out, including ice storms, snow storms, earthquakes, and thunderstorms.  It’s also a terrific resource for pantry cooking, with excellent recipes by Robin Robertson that can be cooked in 15 minutes or less.

Dan is only number four this year, but a lollapalooza may be just around the corner.  Have a copy of Vegan Unplugged on hand before disaster strikes and keep you and your loved ones prepared.  With its quick, easy recipes, this book can also save the day when you simply don’t feel like cooking!
